Katina Nichols

I work as a communications associate for a family-owned ecotourism company that's been around for over 35 years. I handle social media and communications, including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, our blog, press releases, and creating promotional videos. The video production aspect of my job is definitely my favorite thing to do because I'm able to be as creative as I'd like. On any given day, I might be editing footage of a lion consuming a zebra or a Tibetan monk walking along a mountain path. I love that my job forces me to be aware of the greater world and all the spectacular things that are in it. JOURNEYS is a special company run by an adventurous and knowledgable staff that are constantly looking to push boundaries and design daring, enriching adventures.

I left a good-paying, highly-secure job in the biotech industry to begin a career in Real Estate. Why? Because I loved the idea of running my own business and helping people make their home ownership dreams come to fruition. As the daughter of entrepreneurs, this has been a dream of mine for years and with the Ann Arbor housing market beginning to rebound, it seemed like the perfect time.

With my years of contract negotiation experience and personable demeanor, I feel as though I was meant to be a Realtor®. If you or someone you know is looking for a Realtor that you can not only rely on but also have an enjoyable experience with, I would love to hear from you.

Plante Moran is a professional services organization that specializes in accounting, tax and consulting services.  P&M has over 2,000 professionals located mostly in Michigan, Ohio and Illinois, but also have offices in Shanghai, China; Monterrey, Mexico; and Mumbai, India. Plante Moran has been voted as one of Fortune Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” for 14 consecutive years.

I am based out of the Ann Arbor office and work on the audit side of the Real Estate, Private Equity and Municipal industries.  I was able to find this position through campus recruiting activities. Since I was in college pursuing an Accounting degree, I heard nothing but great things about Plante Moran and am pleased that these things were not untrue when I began working.  Ann Arbor was a perfect fit for me as it is close to both where I grew up and where I went to college.  I knew I wanted to stay in Michigan so, again, the location was a big draw for me.

Andrea Kinney

I work as a Senior Managing Editor with Hayden-McNeil Publishing in Plymouth, MI. We publish custom course materials for the higher education market. My job gives me the opportunity to work with many interesting academics in various disciplines from across the country as I serve as their point person throughout the publication process. A recent challenge facing all publishers has been the transition to digital content delivery. While many of my projects are still hard copy texts, several have converted to fully interactive e-books or have added digital components such as animations, assessment tools, videos, etc. within the last year or so. Having been immersed in the print world for so long, I have enjoyed learning the intricacies of digital publishing, and would bet many more of my projects will go paperless within a few years. While it hasn't been the easiest road to navigate, digital publishing is the future, and I look forward to seeing how it unfolds.

As owner and photographer - I do a little bit of everything.  We specialize in location photography - knowing we'll get the best photos when the client is comfortable.  And usually that means at home or a fun outdoor location.  It allows us to be creative, flexible and gives us the freedom to capture posed AND spontaneous moments as they unfold.  I got my start at a very early age.  As far back as I can remember, I've been fascinated with photography.  From the borrowed 1983 Canon A-135mm (on loan from my brother) to the Canon Rebel-G I received on my 16th birthday - photography has always been a part of my life.  What started as a hobby (like many people, I took photos of family, friends, vacations - my parents have many photos of scenic backdrops), eventually turned into taking more and more photos for other people.  While I was in college (Kalamazoo College, '04), I was able to pursue formal training while I earned my bachelor's degree.  As I continued to learn and take photos as a hobby, I still wasn't thinking about it as a business.

That would change in 2009.  I happened to be in a wedding with a friend from childhood who runs the theater program at a local high school and she happened to be looking for a photographer to shoot her shows.  I shot my first show with her the fall of 2009 and since then have not only continued to photograph shows for her, but added the vocal music program.  Additionally, I have added more schools and theater programs in the area to my list of clients.

Having grown up and now living in the area it felt very natural to set up shop here. It also allowed me to take on local high school interns, teaching them the not only photography technique, but time management, business strategies, and more.  I also serve as webmaster and graphic designer for some of the programs.  From these programs, it was a natural progression to senior portraits, family and child photos, weddings, and everything in between.  I'm very lucky to be able to do this for a living - there's not too much to complain about when your job is to capture important moments in people's lives.  There is something very humbling when people ask you to be a part of their first moments as man and wife, or to capture pivotal moments in their history.  And as I continue to build my business, it's been tremendous to see families annually and see the changes in their kids as they grow into young adults.  I look forward to the day when I can compare a photo of a bride or groom with one I took from their childhood.  There are a lot of components to my job that may be tedious but necessary (editing comes to mind), but at the end of the day, I'm pretty lucky and happy to be able to observe and preserve moments with my camera.

I serve on the investment committee for a local money manager. Our firm invests about $300 million for about 200 clients. Half our client base comes from Michigan, with the other half peppered across the country. Our main focus is domestic growth equities. We also have a growing business in municipal bonds. I mainly follow companies in the retail and technology sectors.

There's more money in Southeast Michigan than people often assume. The auto industry made a lot of people rich over the years, and a good amount of that money is still here. The investment finance industry isn't nearly as developed here as, say, Chicago, but I'd bet that it's on the way up.

After years working for various security software companies on the coasts I realized that this work could be done just about anywhere—as long as the company had access to talent. While I certainly enjoy everything that tier one cities have to offer, they never felt like a permanent home to me or my wife. She grew up in Brighton, Michigan, and when I came across Duo Security—and saw that they were based in Ann Arbor—I decided to explore them further.

Turns out Duo is about as close as you can get to a hip, San Francisco software startup... just 2,000 miles east. We're backed by Google Ventures and True Ventures. We have an amazing office culture, outstanding team, and founders that care about building the company in Michigan.

I never saw a job posting, but instead decided to email the founders, Jon and Dug, to ask them if they were considering future product or marketing hires. Turns out they were. After interviewing in person and finding it was even more a fit than it appeared on paper, my wife and I moved to Ann Arbor just a month later. It's turned out to be one of the best life decisions I've ever made. Ann Arbor is a perfect mix of big city taste with small town accessibility. I'm no longer jet setting on planes all the time, or spending $18 an hour to park in the city. It's good to be here.

I am the go-to guy for 30 student staff members at the Campus Information Center (CIC). I coordinate the scheduling of two info desks and brainstorm new ways to train and develop our student employees. We have 6 committees at CIC which are essentially studentled, but I serve on each committee as a liason between our director and the staff members. In addition, I also get to do fun things like payroll authorization and paperwork (my favorite--- well, no...) Currently, I am working with my supervisor to develop more of a social media presence on campus.

As a combination treatment psychiatrist, I use both medication and talk therapy (psychotherapy) to help people manage problems with mood, anxiety, behavior, and relationships.  While I spent a lot of time in academic medicine, I recently decided to open my own practice where I specialize in offering combination therapy (medication and psychotherapy) to those with significant difficulties.  I also help by prescribing medication for people who are already in talk-therapy with a psychologist or social worker (who don't have the ability to write prescriptions), and I work closely with a select group of local therapists.  I enjoy my work because it allows me to really make a difference in the lives of others.  I also get to watch amazing transformations happen in people with time and work.  My practice is evidence-based, meaning I use the medical literature and latest studies extensively in my medical decision-making, and I have trained in and incorporate elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectic behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic psychotherapy, which gives me a broad range of knowledge and options with which to help get people better.

All the products are printed onsite with 3D printers.

Technical consulting bridges the gap between engineering fundamentals and business strategies. I work on a multitude of projects that span all aspects of vehicle engineering from engine optimization and fuel economy to full vehicle concept development for the future civilian and defense industries. Although we do not do full manufacturing we often build concepts and test vehicles. My job requires me to think outside the box, demands creativity all while being supported by my technical education.

We are performance brokers for artists and bands across the country, Canada, and Australia.  If they are performing in these respective countries, we had a hand in it setting it up.  I started off as a local concert promoter while I attended the University of Michigan and eventually landed an internship with the company, which ultimately led to the position I hold today. My favorite elements of the job are working to give great artists a lifestyle that allows them to pursue their artistic visions with minimal constraints and knowing that you are one of the many unseen hands that make memorable nights for thousands of audience members possible.
