EMU chooses construction firm for Mark Jefferson project, to begin next spring
Not all of the construction cranes are in Ann Arbor. Ypsilanti is getting ready to bring in one or two of its own as Eastern Michigan University prepares to start construction on the Mark Jefferson Science Complex next spring.
Eastern Michigan University took a major step forward on a project that promises to help transform its campus, the renovation and expansion of the Mark Jefferson Science Complex.
The university hired Lansing-based Christman Company and Detroit-based Dumas Concepts And Building Construction Services to manage work on the $90 million project.
The overall project promises to be the largest in school history. The work includes renovations to the 180,802 square foot structure and a 151,000-square-foot expansion. EMU is currently looking into ways to make the 1969 building as environmentally friendly as possible.
The building is named for the university’s head of the geography department between 1901 and 1939. The project is expected start construction next spring and be finished within four years. It will be paid primarily with bonds.
