Higher Education: Jobs Landed

I am responsible for the day to day administration of policies, recruiting, training and development, compensation and benefits, employee and labor relations, and organizational effectiveness.

As the Executive Assistant to the Chair of the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the College of Engineering I maintain the calendar  (includes heavy meeting scheduling, maintain recurrent meetings, personal appointments, conflict resolution), coordinate travel arrangements, and write and maintain confidential reference letters, correspondence, and candidate offer letters.  In addition, I maintain the public schedule for booking conference rooms, maintain an extensive electronic filing system for the administration office, and coordinate Distinguished Dow and Professorship Lectures.  I also am in charge of purchases and reconciliation as well as coordinate CSE Excom meetings, CSE Faculty meetings, Adcom meetings, CSE Faculty Retreat, EECS Faculty Recognition Dinner, Holiday Party, and Retirement parties.

I hold two positions at the University of Michigan. The first, Copyright Specialist, is at the University of Michigan Library's Copyright Office. At this position I work closely with faculty, staff, and students to provide expertise around copyright matters (publishing, teaching, reuse, etc) but also work with those same individuals to promote and support Open Access Publishing. With my colleagues at the University of Michigan Press (now a part of the library) and the Scholarly Publishing Office I am working to provide greater faculty and researcher support when publishing in Open Access journals and when creating Open Textbooks that are free of charge and remixable by others.

The second position, Open Education Specialist, is where I work for the Open.Michigan initiative to help faculty and students to maximize the potential of their educational content. My time is spent communicating with faculty and student groups on campus where I provide education and assistance to those who want to provide their teaching and learning content as Open Educational Resources (commonly abbreviated as OER). Much of this education and assistance revolves around technical infrastucture (hosting the material) and copyright/other legal issues. These OER materials are made available to the public free of charge and free to reuse and remix.

I promote and execute programs for the Center For Entrepreneurship - both curriculum-based and for the Michigan Small Business Development Center (MI-SBTDC) - that are focused on entrepreneurship and small business development. Small business development is essential for Michigan to rebound and EMU and the SBTDC are leading the way to that recovery.

I work with others in the library to manage the operations of the Book Division within the Clements Library. My duties include receiving new materials, cataloging books, providing reference assistance to researchers, and other tasks in the library as needed.

I am a research assistant in the Division of General Medicine at the University of Michigan. I received my Business Administration degree from Concordia University in 2007. My interest and talent in database development and graphic design applications as well as her facility with web based projects provides valuable support for the investigative team in their research activities.

I facilitate recruiting visits and manage office operations in the Graduate Career Services office at the Ford School of Public Policy. Our graduate students are recruited by and take positions within various international, federal, state, and local governments, nonprofits and NGOs, and some private sector companies. I also produce marketing and communications materials and advise students who visit the Graduate Career Services office. My research focuses on developing a new method for rapid medical diagnostics that uses tiny spinning magnets (called magnetic microspheres and/or nanoparticles). I have built and tested a lab prototype and am currently in the process of developing the next stage prototype device.

My job entails assisting the Associate Vice President with traditional marketing and overseeing our grassroots marketing, social media efforts and some event planning. This requires developing strategy, networking and most importantly community outreach and engagement.I am always looking for new groups to partner with whether they are non-profit or groups just looking for new ways to engage in the community.

I help communicate university messages to the public. I write press releases, compile and produce appeal letters that are sent to university donors and alumni, develop the university's social networking presence, and manage website content. A lot of my job has to do with helping others craft their message in a way that is both appealing and thought provoking to the target audience. I assist in campaign creation for the university's admission and development departments. My job also involves digital photography and video production for use in university marketing materials.

I provide visionary leadership in the planning, direction and implementation of activities in the areas of university relations, fundraising, international alumni relations, reunions, legislative advocacy, student recruiting and diversity scholarships and initiatives. 

I design and develop web application and back-end software using Java, Ruby on Rails, AJAX, and other technologies, with a focus on empowering the scholarly community by archiving and delivering the world's academic material.

I'm the lead designer on our current NIH-funded game project, Drug Scene Investigators.  I'm responsible for the game's overall design, style, and client-side programming.  I also design and animate characters and some scenery for the game.  Since our company is small, there are occasional IT or operational tasks I need to perform as well.  Recently I've been involved in planning out possible games for a new round of grant proposals.

In this position I am responsible mainly for program development and coordination for undergraduate students, particularly around the arts.  My job responsibilities often include event planning, marketing, student outreach, program assessment, and advising.
