Construction crews work to restore historic East Delhi Bridge
A historic bridge in Scio Township is getting a second lease on life now that the Washtenaw County Road Commission is restoring the East Delhi Bridge.
Closed since 2005, the East Delhi Bridge is getting some new life breathed into it by the Washtenaw County Road Commission.
The old steel truss bridge (think of the metal bridges from toy train sets) has been picked up and moved onto the banks of the Huron River in Scio Township. Doing that allows workers to fix the original bridge while new foundations are installed.
“The truss part was in bad shape and the foundations were in really bad shape,” says Kelly Jones, a bridge engineer for the Washtenaw County Road Commission.
The historic bridge has been slated for replacement, but the county found money to restore it. The bridge has been a local icon for 90-120 years, depending on the historical reference.
The 109-foot-long bridge is set to be lifted back into its original space and reopened by this November.
