Ride a bike, take a hike: Ann Arbor encourages locals to curb their cars

Ann Arbor is pushing it residents to leave their cars in their garages as the city promotes Curb Your Car Month in May.

More and more people in Washtenaw County are taking to the streets in anything but their cars as part of Curb Your Car Month. The initiative hopes to encourage more people to walk, run, bike, bus and take more trains to help improve their environment and health.

Sara Tucker said she was surprised at the high level of interest among her colleagues at Washtenaw Woodwrights in Curb Your Car Month in Ann Arbor this year.

 

“I really wasn’t thinking that they were going to be very interested,” said Tucker, marketing manager for the 13-employee design, building and remodeling company.

 

“There was some good dialogue about it,” said Tucker, who has committed herself to walking to work 10 times during the month.

 

That could be one sign that the high cost of gas is arousing interest in the fourth annual Curb Your Car Month, which is designed to raise consciousness about alternatives to commuting by private automobile. The month-long program features walk, bike, bus and car-pool days, among other events.
