Mysterious tags show up on Tree Town’s biggest symbols

Little steel disks are finding their way onto some of Ann Arbor’s trees. City officials don’t know who is putting them there or why, leaving some to speculate its some sort of artistic statement.

Someone or some people are making a distinctive mark on what Ann Arborites like to hug the most. The artists or vandals (or both) are leaving small metal discs on a handful of trees in the city.

There’s more on downtown street trees than leaf buds this spring. A handful of trees, this one on West Washington Street, are sporting galvanized steel discs.

 

Each bears a three-digit number. But discs are not the work of city foresters; nor do city tree-minders know who the survey tags belong to.
