A chicken on every plot …in Ann Arbor

Chickens can now roam free in Ann Arbor, well almost. The City Council passed an ordinance allowing city residents to raise chickens at their homes.

Ann Arborites are known for doing things differently and the city is continuing that reputation by allowing residents to raise their own poultry. Sound strange? It’s actually a growing movement, with New York City, Oakland, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Seattle and Portland, Ore., all becoming chicken-friendly.

City officials say it could take them up to 60 days to get a permit process in place, but after that the chickens that have captured the imagination of Ann Arborites can come home to roost.

After hearing from more than 20 people – almost all “pro-chicken” – Monday, the City Council OK’d a plan that will let homeowners keep up to four hens in their backyards.
