Google nonprofits model may go global

A new Google-bred program spawned in Ann Arbor is set to spread its wings in Michigan this year so it can take flight around the world soon.

A Google program invented in Ann Arbor is about to surface around the world.

A local Google program designed to teach students how to run AdWords campaigns for regional nonprofit groups may be expanded at Google offices globally.

Starting this fall, classes at Washtenaw Community College, Huron High School and Michigan State University will start learning how to help local nonprofit groups use online advertising, said Ann Arbor Google AdWords strategist Julie Miller.

It’s also being considered as a model for a philanthropic program at Google offices in Mountain View, Calif., Boston and London, Miller said.

Originally launched when Ann Arbor Google employees began periodically visiting a class at Community High School, the program was expanded into a Eastern Michigan University business course where students worked with nonprofits to better advertise online.
