Commerce Guys moves to Ann Arbor, brings about a dozen jobs
Ann Arbor is where the software talent is in Michigan, and that's why Commerce Guys is moving from Jackson to Ace Deuce. It's as simple as that. "We're growing rapidly and we primarily need software people," says Mike O'Connor, president of Commerce Guys. O'Connor explains the move from Jackson, a town he and his team love, to Ann Arbor comes down to talent attraction. "Our last three hire have all been from Ann Arbor," he says. Commerce Guys is an e-commerce company that integrates Drupal, a popular open source content management system, with its customer's Internet sales platform. The 4-year-old company got its start in Jackson and has now grown to 40 people around the world, including a strong presence in France. Of its 40 employees, about a dozen are based in Jackson. They will move to Ann Arbor later this spring as the company works to speed up its hiring process. It has hired five people over the last year, but has struggled to attract quality software professionals to move to Jackson. Ann Arbor has much better name recognition with out-of-town applicants, is an easier sell because of its strong tech environment and has a significant talent pool to draw from. We plan on adding 15 jobs this year," O'Connor says. "That will double our size. We're planning on similar growth in Europe."
