A lot of people have questions about what the future holds for the South University business district. A spokeswoman for the South University Area Association tries to answer them in a Q&A.

The future of the South University business district on the University of Michigan‘s campus has been a hot topic in recent months as developers look to build taller and taller buildings. The goal is to increase core density and take pressure off nearby neighborhoods.  But locals bristle at the aesthetics and potential impact of these buildings.

Ladd, director of Ann Arbor‘s South University Area Association, tackles the controversy these developments have created with a Q&A.

The Ann Arbor business district along South University Avenue – popularly known as “South U” – had its zoning changed in 2006 to allow for taller buildings and has attracted development. Zaragon Place, a 10-story, 248-bed building, is under construction at 619 E. University Ave., where the Anberay Apartments used to be. And now, University Village is being proposed. It’s two buildings that would be 15 and 20 stories and bring in a projected 1,400 students. Maggie Ladd, director of Ann Arbor‘s South University Area Association, discusses the area’s growth.
