But now, with the elbow grease of its growing creative class, the former factory town is creating an identity all its own. Terry Parris looks at the community's emerging DIY arts identity and how it squares with Ann Arbor's more established institutions.

Offering writing workshops and tutoring to kids for free, and channeling the energy and enthusiasm of nearly 200 voluteers, author Dave Egger's brainchild has resulted in the kind of experience that changes both lives and minds.

There aren't many places where you can get locally grown meat and help your fellow citizen at the same time. Dawn Farm in Ypsilanti is a fully functioning farm where patients recovering from addiction can work hard, get well and do good.
