Ypsilanti city and schools consider combining facilities to save money
The idea of regionalism is expanding in Ypsilanti where the city and the school district are looking at sharing a space for the city’s department of public works and the school district’s bus garage.
It’s one of the underlying lessons of toddlerhood: Learning to share.
When most people think of regionalism the idea of municipalities combining services comes to mind. Well, they’re expanding that idea in Ypsilanti where the city and school district are looking into sharing an industrial space.
The space would be home to the city’s Department of Public Works and the school district’s bus garage. Right now the two government bodies are in the getting-to-know-you phase as they review potential sites.
“Once they find a site it will become more of a discussion,” says April McGrath, assistant city manager for Ypsilanti.
One site they are currently considering is the old landfill off I-94. Both the school district and the city are expected to revisit the idea later this summer.
