Ypsilanti has lots of houses on hills, but some have more history to them than others. Excerpt: A fine house on a hill is the dream of many, but not many make the dream come true. Such was the good fortune of John Gilbert Jr. whose house on the hill still stands at 227 N. Grove St. in Ypsilanti. His father, Maj. John Gilbert was a contractor for the Erie Canal who moved to Ypsilanti in January of 1831 and immediately became involved in the business and political affairs of the community. While in Ypsilanti, Gilbert invested in mills and property, doing well in real estate. He lost control of his mills in the financial panic of 1837, and by 1840 he had only a few pieces of property on the east side of Ypsilanti.
