Terumo Cardiovascular Systems hires 165 in Ann Arbor
Terumo Cardiovascular Systems has been on a hiring spree lately, adding 165 people since 2009, most of which have come in the last year. "We have done a lot of hiring in the last year," says Barbara Schmid, director of corporate communications for Terumo Cardiovascular Systems. "We have added quite a few positions across the company." The cardiovascular-medical device firm has roots in southeast Michigan that date back to the 1960s. It recently constructed a new chemistry lab, remodeled the existing buildings for future growth and expanded an office building as part of a $1 million tax credit deal with the state in 2009. Today the company employs 540 people and few interns. When combined with its sister company, Terumo Heart, the two make up the 23rd largest employer in Washtenaw County. The Terumo companies expect to keep hiring at this rate for the next year and beyond. They choose the Ann Arbor area to expand because of the deep pool of talent it offers. "Ann Arbor has been a wealth of talent," Schmid says. "We have taken a lot of automotive engineers over the past couple of years and from the University of Michigan."
