U-M Nursing School wins $350,000 grant to study OR nurses
The too-often overlooked nurses in an operating room are about to become the center of attention now that the University of Michigan has received a $350,000 grant to study their performance and how it impacts patient health.
When it comes to the operating room, much of the focus is usually given to surgeon performance and judgment. University of Michigan professor, AkkeNeel Talsma, wants to understand how the nurses assisting that surgeon impact the health of the patient.
That interest has turned into a research opportunity now that Talsma has won a $350,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to fund a three year study.
Talsma plans to focus on operating-room nurses, investigating how staffing numbers, training levels and procedure interruptions contribute to their actions and, ultimately, affect patient outcomes. U-M’s School of Nursing will facilitate the study.
The grant comes from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nursing Faculty Scholars program. It aims to develop the next generation of national leaders in nursing through grants like these.
