Concentrate Speaker Event: The Business Of Making Music

It used to be, if you wanted to be in the music industry you had to head to the coasts. Sam Valenti IV didn’t like those rules so he followed in Berry Gordy’s footsteps and made a few rules of his own. Today he runs Ghostly International, Ann Arbor’s highly successful and hipper than hip music label. Sam kicks off Concentrate’s 2011 Speaker Series with a talk about the evolution of his company here in Ann Arbor. The event is Thursday, January 27th. Sign up today!

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It was a little more than 10 years ago that U-M college student Sam Valenti IV dreamed up Ghostly International in his dorm room. Since then it’s lived up to its name, becoming an internationally recognized electronic and ambient music label with six full time employees and more than 30 musical artists. The label (and its sibling dance label Spectral Sound) not only releases popular CDs and mp3s, it provides music for movies, video games and commercials worldwide, and has a highly renown iPhone app that matches music to your mood.

Licensing, merchandise, musical events and its web store have all played a part in the company’s success and Valenti is always looking for ways to innovate and grow. In fact, Ghostly has become a brand that has inspired passion, devotion and loyalty in its audiences, giving them a sense of style and identity.

Sam is this month’s featured guest at Concentrate’s Speaker Event: The Business of Making Music. He’ll talk about his company’s evolution here in Ann Arbor, the open-book management style Ghostly has adopted, and how they’ve found success. He’ll also be answering your questions.
