50 years, 50 stories: Ann Arbor Historical Street Exhibit

At 16 landmark sites in downtown Ann Arbor, 3-dimensional glass panels and pedestal images portray the city’s history as it relates to the present streetscape. The first of its kind, the Ann Arbor Historical Street Exhibit offers an educational walking tour through our city’s history. A $10,000 grant from the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation helped launch the Exhibit with funding for the very first installation at Courthouse Square.

50 years, 50 stories: Ann Arbor Art Center

For over a century, the Ann Arbor Art Center has been sparking creativity for people of all ages and abilities. Studio classes and arts education, monthly exhibitions and a gallery shop that showcases the work of over 370 artists brought more than 40,000 visitors to the Center last year. Over the years, the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation has provided more than $200,000 in grant support to help the Art Center grow.

50 years, 50 stories: Coordinated Funding

Launched in 2011, the Coordinated Funding initiative seeks to improve the way local funders and nonprofits work together to improve the lives of our community’s most vulnerable residents. Gaining national recognition, the unique public-private partnership is already yielding real benefits.

50 years, 50 stories: Anna Botsford Bach Fund

For more than 90 years, the Anna Botsford Bach Home in Ann Arbor offered older women a safe place to live out their retirement years until the facility closed in 2002. Intent on continuing the home’s mission after it closed, its Board of Directors established a permanent endowment at the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, which has provided more than $1.14 million to support local programs for seniors and their caregivers.

50 years, 50 stories: Community Health Clinics

Washtenaw County is fortunate to have a number of community health clinics that are committed to providing access to quality health care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. Over the years, nearly $600,000 in grant support from the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation and its donors have helped these clinics expand and maintain critical services.

50 years, 50 stories: The Sarns Family Fund

In 1991 the Sarns Family transferred their family foundation’s assets to the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation to establish AAACF’s first donor-advised fund. Over the years, the Sarns Family Fund at AAACF has generously supported a number of local organizations, giving the Sarns the ability to continue to direct their philanthropy in ways that have made a meaningful difference for our local community.

Change the first five years and you change everything. Research shows that children who receive the support they need in early childhood are more likely to succeed in school - and in life. The Washtenaw Success by 6 Great Start Collaborative works with 40 community organizations to ensure that families in need have access to preschool, childcare training, health insurance, parenting classes, and more.

Bhushan and Swatee Kulkarni came to the U.S. from Mumbai, India over 25 years ago. A successful entrepreneur and community leader, Bhushan is generous in the time and resources he gives to support a number of local organizations. One moment in his career served as the catalyst for the Kulkarni family’s commitment to giving back to help others.

New Tech High School
50 years, 50 stories: Story #29 New Tech High School

Next spring, Ypsilanti’s New Tech High School will celebrate its first graduating class of students. Opened in 2010, New Tech offers an innovative option for high school students in Washtenaw County - with project-based learning and access to technology as the core of its instructional approach to help better prepare students for the 21st century.

Food Gatherers
50 years, 50 stories: Story #28 Food Gatherers

Michigan’s first food rescue program got its start on a fall day 25 years ago, when a group of volunteers borrowed a van and collected 50 pounds of food to distribute to hot meal programs in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. A lot has changed since then. Today, Food Gatherers - with the help of 5,500 community volunteers - now distributes more than 5.45 million pounds of food to a network of 150 local community programs and helps feed thousands in need.
