Let's face it, we all need a day off. Especially with the start of school. Concentrate will be taking a break next week as we get used to homework, after school clubs, returning U-M students, and the generalized chaos that follows Labor Day. But look for a new issue on September 14th, when we return with more stories of innovation and growth.
The editorial staff of Concentrate would like to wish you a happy and safe Fourth of July. We'll be spending the week barbecuing, catching up on summer movies and sampling Michigan's finest microbrews. Some time in a hammock may also be involved. City governments come in all styles and flavors. Local filmmaker and urbanist Kirk Westphal has made a short film examining what makes for an effective system and we'll be showing it at TOMORROW'S Speaker Event. We'll also be discussing how informed citizen involvement is vital to the success of any community. Imagine paddling in your kayak from Ann Arbor to Lake Erie. Or up into Oakland County. Pretty cool, huh? The Huron River Watershed Council is hoping to create a 100-mile water trail that does just that. Sam Valenti IV didn't like those rules so he followed in Berry Gordy's footsteps and made a few rules of his own. Today he runs Ghostly International, Ann Arbor's highly successful and hipper than hip music label.
