Video: Why car seat checks keep Michigan’s children safe

It's surprisingly complex to properly install a child's safety seat. We visited a seat check day at a local dealership to learn about the many things required to do it correctly.

Keeping kids safe in a vehicle is as easy as buckling them into an approved safety seat. Unfortunately, that’s where the easy part ends. A child safety seat must be appropriate for the child’s height, weight, and age, and it must be properly installed in the vehicle. And that’s not always simple.

At a car seat check event, certified child passenger safety technicians can help parents correctly install their safety seat, plus share valuable information about keeping kids safe in a vehicle. Contact your county or city department of health, your local hospital, or Children’s Hospital of Michigan to learn more about upcoming events.

This video is part of “Children of Michigan,” a series on the importance of health and wellbeing for Michigan’s children. It is made possible with funding from the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation.
