The mother-daughter team of Vicky Gordon and Anna Locke are looking to open their second Pure Barre location in downtown Ann Arbor this spring.

Pure Barre is the largest barre franchise in North America with nearly 400 franchises. The company’s exercise classes offer a total body workout that lifts your seat, tones your thighs, abs and arms, and burns fat.

Gordon and Locke launched a franchise in downtown Ann Arbor in 2008. They eventually moved it to its current location at 3139 Oak Valley Dr in Ann Arbor. With the change in location brought a slightly different clientele that resonated more with townies than the college student/young professional demographic of downtown.

“We want to come back to downtown and get that demographic back,” Locke says.

Pure Barre Downtown Ann Arbor has signed a lease at 539 E Liberty next to the Michigan Theatre. Locke and Gordon are partnering with another mother-daughter duo (Diane and Erica Heisel) to open it up later this spring. The team plans to have an extensive renovation to the 1,748-square-foot space done to make ready for their clientele.

“The entire interior will have to be demoed,” Gordon says. “The entire space will have to be redone.”
