Zingerman’s considers expansion into Ypsilanti

If Ypsilanti is starting to remind Ann Arborites of what their town looked like 20 some years ago it might be that a lot of the funky-type of businesses Tree Town was known for are opening up their again. One more that is coming down the pipeline is a possible outpost for Zingerman’s.

The folks at Zingerman’s pride themselves on making the most of their little corner of Ann Arbor‘s Kerrytown district. Now they are looking at the possibility of doing the same thing in Ypsilanti.

Paul Saginaw, one of Zingerman’s co-founders, has long expressed a desire to expand the famous eatery’s reach to next door Ypsilanti. However, he and other organizers are in the very earliest stages of planning… far from the point where they start running around looking for a space.

“It’s definitely in the pipe dream stage,” says Paul Sickman-Garner, marketing manager for Zingerman’s.

It has been suggested that Ypsi’s Zingerman’s would be a bit different from the existing Ann Arbor food destination. The biggest rumor is that unlike traditional businesses where prices are set and everybody pays the same, the new restaurant would be inspired by a pay-what-you-can afford philosophy.

The idea isn’t for Zingerman’s to subsidize the eating habits of its patrons but to give everyone of all income brackets a better chance to enjoy the goods of the famous Jewish deli.
