Ann Arbor’s Switchback turns new web technology into new jobs

Small, dedicated groups of people change the world every day. Ann Arbor-based Switchback isn’t necessarily trying to conquer the world. It’ll settle for filling the bank accounts of its founding staff.

Is six months too ambitious a goal? Since that’s how long this web-development company has been around..

The handful of people who founded Switchback all had their own website companies when they met at Ann Arbor’s Drupal User’s Group. It was there that they realized their efforts would be put to better use as a team instead of as individual companies.

Today, the company employs three full-timers and another four part-time employees. In its short life the group has attracted so much work that its already looking for new team members. Specifically it’s looking for 2 to 4 high-end engineering contracts with experience in CMS development.

“Our hope is these relationships will turn in to long-term, full-time employment opportunities,” says Stephen Colson, co-founder of Switchback.

The company is also looking to tap into University of Michigan School of information for an internship program. Colson says Switchback’s founders are discussing the best ways to train the up-and-coming workforce.
