Soar Technology’s real smarts creates artificial intelligence, and jobs

It looks like a bit of Michigan‘s new brain-based economy will be manufactured by the created from artificial intelligence firms like Soar Technology.

The Ann Arbor-based firm spun off from the University of Michigan with five employees a decade ago. Today 35 people work there thanks to an average revenue growth rate of 44 percent a year. The company still has bright prospects, expecting to create another 10 jobs within the next year or two.

Soar works mainly with artificial intelligence, helping computer systems figure out problems on their own and simplifying interaction between the system and the user.

“We’re putting human level reasoning that is able to adapt and react as humans do with the information at hand,” says Jim Rosbe, president of Soar.

Most of its business comes for the U.S. military where id has contracts to do lots of research and development for military and intelligence branches. However, the company sees some of its best business prospects in the private arena.

“We expect to continue to grow but we see the bigger prospects in putting that technology out commercially,” Rosbe says.
